Training

All users are expected to follow the training process below to gain access to the MEMS.  The user is expected to prepare grids with their own sample for training purposes.  Staff will assist with training for negative stain grid preparation upon request.  Please request a consultation in PPMS if you would like training for grid preparation and microscope use.

CM10 training provides an introduction to electron microscope operation and screening of negative stain grids.

  • 3 guided sessions (minimum)
  • 5 independent sessions (without incident)
  • Images with FFTs must be shared with staff to move to the T12 negative stain training

T12 negative stain training provides the user with details on electron microscope operation by covering microscope alignment and low dose setup.

  • Introductory 3 hour shared session with another user
  • Individual 3 hour session
  • Assisted session(s) as necessary for independent use
  • 8 independent sessions (without incident)
  • Images with FFTs must be shared with staff to move to T12 cryo training

T12 cryo training is for people who have already learned how to prepare cryo grids on either the Vitrobots or CP3.  The user will learn how to use the Gatan 626 cryo holder and dry pumping station for screening cryo grids.

  • Introductory 4 hour shared session with another user
  • Individual 4 hour session with a possibility of a second 4 hour training session
  • Assisted session(s) as necessary for independent use
  • 10 independent sessions (without incident)
  • Supervised review session and images with FFTs must be shared with staff to move to T12 cryo training

F20 training is by request only.  F20 training builds on the general T12 operation, providing information about more micorscope alignments, direct electron detector training, use of SerialEM, and higher ordered screening of cryo samples (2D averages, low resolution 3D volumes).

  • 1 day shared session covering cryo holder usage and microscope alignments
  • 1 day shared session covering SerialEM account set up and training
